BRE Offices

Architect: Feilden Clegg Architects

Client: Building Research Establishment

The new offices and seminar rooms for the Building Research Establishment were designed to offer a model for low energy offices of the future. the building achieved the highest recorded BREEAM rating by reducing heating energy consumption, avoiding air conditioning and minimising the need for artificial lighting. The building was of high thermal mass and was naturally ventilated. High daylight levels were provided, but solar gains were controlled. Photovoltaic panels reduce energy consumption. Received RIBA award and 1998 Building Services Award for Environmental Initiative.
