New library and rare book store for an Oxford college. The building also contains a lecture theatre, reading room and cafÈ. The lecture theatre was buried underground to avoid the need for mechanical cooling, it being only mechanically ventilated. The cafÈ was naturally ventilated, as was the library area. The rare book store was fully air conditioned to maintain close control conditions. The loads on the rare book store were reduced by locating it in the basement of the building where conditions would tend to be stable. Low energy lighting was installed throughout. The lighting was daylight linked where sufficient daylight was available.
